Baras honors top student

Posted on October 13, 2008 by Herbert Joseph Carigma under Proudly Barasenian

Whenever we have a kababayan who makes it to the top 10 of any professional exams, seems everybody wants to have pictures taken with them. And rightly so. For a small town like us, where everybody knows everybody, it’s a big feat to belong to the top 10. You’ll become an instant celebrity in a positive way.

This morning, the municipal government awarded a Certificate of Recognition to Karen Reyes who grabbed the fourth spot in the Medical Technologist Licensure Examination. She was also given a small amount of money as a token. Her mother Evelyn and other family members were also present.

Here’s Jayben Matamis surrounded by municipal employees in a program on Jan. 22, 2007. He topped the Nursing Board Exam in December 2006.

More than the recognition, the local government sends out a message to every parents: invest in education. I know some parents who, despite being low-wage employees, find means to keep their children in school. Just like what we hear during graduation speeches: “Ang gabi ay ginagawang araw.” And then there are those who doesn’t mind having their children quit school. They might have their own reasons that I cannot comprehend.

I congratulate the honor ranking students and parents for their remarkable accomplishments. I am sure the ingredients of hard work, persistence, can-do attitude, and belief in God, really work. I commend the Barasrizal.com for highlighting the positives in us, Barasenos. That bonds us more than portrayal of negative politics. We are indeed surrounded with positive roles models.

Can our municipal government, schools, and community leaders build a municipal library so we can help harness the minds of our youth and produce more topnotchers in our midst. Mind is a terrible thing to waste. I
