How would you change the Tromba Festival?
Posted on May 10, 2009, 4:44 AM under Culture and TraditionI’ve been covering the Tromba Festival since 2004. In all these years, some things never change. We need your suggestions to have it improved.
First, since 2005, the organizers already have a template on the May 1 activities – pagoda in the morning, tromba in the afternoon and agape at night. There’s no problem with that. It’s just that it tends to be boring and very predictive. Why don’t we make the whole day filled with fun, say by having Pinoy games played in the early afternoon? This could be participated in by children in grade school who don’t really participate in the tromba and has energy left from the basaan on that morning.
Musikat band was hired to play a very long set of songs during the agape.

Second, make announcements on the activities. Although, as I have said, there’s already a template of activities, I think it’s still appropriate to have some signs put up weeks before May 1.
I noticed that it’s always Barangay Mabini who has the most number and unique foods.

Third: How ironic that government officials brag the tromba festival yet none of them set their foot in the church at the start and by the end of the street dance? In fact, there was really no organizer of the tromba. You see nobody in authority who asks people to catch up whenever there’s a gap in the parade. As much as I want to believe that this tradition is more of a communal activity, but if there was no one to have it organized, we’ll be doing the same mistakes over and over.
Who get’s the meatiest part of the lechon?

Fourth, as the tromba culminates and reaches its peak in the church patio, it becomes free-for-all. Groups dance by themselves. Again, this roots from not having an organizer. Instead of the usual dance showdown in the patio, we might come up with contests that are still relevant to the festivity. Which group has the biggest number of members? What barangay has the most number of people? Who has the best designed shirt?
Adobo

Lastly, have a screening of the bands who will join the agape. Whoever that band was, who sang Ang Huling El Bimbo, didn’t give justice to the song. T’was the most boring rendition of the song I’ve ever heard.
Also, since it is Labor Day, can we have a job fair?
So, what’s the point I’m trying to raise? Create a committee who has the experience in organizing such activity. I know a lot of Barasenians would want to volunteer to make this tradition fun.

Para sa kin, hindi na dapat baguhin, improve na lang. Legacy kasi natin yan sa ating mga ninuno. Kung ano meron tayo ngayon, pagyamanin na lang at lalo pagandahin ang celebrasyon.
