How to rock Baras
Posted on January 29, 2009, 8:05 PM under Culture and TraditionI’m one of those who dropped by the old municipal hall last Sunday to watch the so-called Battle of the Bands. None of the participants, though, got my attention and I decided to leave after an hour.
Here are my thoughts: bands who joined the contest don’t connect with their audience. Most of the songs I’ve heard are not music, but noise. Lots of shouting, head banging and shouting – scenes familiar with a band concert but these should also be seen on the audience. Sure, they have friends and family members who support them but I’m quite sure that the rest of the viewers are wondering what the hell the band members are playing. Some of the participants were my classmate in kinder, elementary and high school.
I am not an authority on music. I don’t play any musical instrument. But what I do know is how to appreciate music. I have watched some concerts, even those by rockistas. Perhaps the next time any group organizes a band contest, they’ll be more considerate of the audience and not just to the band members. Take note that the contest was done in a public place which means they are meant to be appreciated by all.
What could be done? Totally avoid playing original composition. This is not a song-writing competition but a rock band contest. Don’t expect us to know your songs. In lieu of the original songs, organizers could come up with a pre-determined list of songs that participants can pick. Eraserheads, Parokya ni Edgar, Kamikazee, 6 cycle mind, Urbandub, Stonefree, etc., there’s a lot of OPM bands out there whose songs are familiar. I believe that one of the true tests of being a musician is giving a new twist to an old song.
Organizers could also consider using the power of the Internet in registering those who want to participate in the contest. Ask for the pictures of the band and flash their names in the wide-screen projector. Organizers could randomly assign the songs to the band once the registration is closed.
What I was also thinking was the possibility of merging a rock band contest with that of Banda Baras/49/81. I believe it was done somewhere before and if my memory serves me right, it was called RockOrchestra.

Nag-Judge ako this night and ang daming banda na sumali, lahat sila magaling and panalo for me… This is a nice thing you’ve did guys, you give the opportunities for the bands like us to exposed ourselves and show our talents ,and i really appreciate it…I’m planning for a battle as soon as possible as i can,no such time right now…support me guys,please? For those musicians out there,you know what I feel right? LOVE WHAT YOU WANT, LOVE MUSIC, LOVE GOD…
