How to cover the pagoda
Posted on May 1, 2010, 11:24 AM under Culture and TraditionThis is my seventh year of covering the activities during May 1. All the activities are pretty much easy to cover, with the exception of the fluvial parade, or pagoda sa ilog.

For one, time is unpredictable. Although a time is set on when the parade would start, you’ll never know when exactly it’s going to happen. Second, it involves water. I don’t have a water proof camera, or even a submersible one, so I have to take extra care when taking shots. And third, it’s hard to find a good angle.Almost every year I go to the same place to take photos. Good thing a homeowner allowed me enter his house and take pictures, from, well, a different point of view.
This time, I took extra care of my dSLR. I brought a trash bag which, as I read on some magazines, is a must for professional photographers. Some classmates who saw me said I brought some trash, but in reality, it was just a protective cover for my camera and lenses. Another thing, I bought a plastic casing for a point-and-shoot so that while my dSLR is protected, my P&S can still take water shots.
Here are the initial photos. Some videos were also taken but I that will be for a later post.
The church was closed after the mass/before the pagoda.

Former parish priest Giovanni Yago joined the pagoda.

Bird’s eye view as the pagoda passes through the bridge.

Since I was a child I always enjoy watching Tromba.People sharing their joy, dancing with Mother Mary then go to church to say a prayer. When I started studying and working in Manila I always make sure to come home to Baras to see the Tromba. Now that I reside overseas I still try my best to come home to Baras to see it.
It is very sad that the last Tromba was a bit contreversial. Maybe it is not a Catholic Religious practice but Tromba is a Baras people’s religious tradition. The Parish Priest come and go but the Baras Religious Tradition is here to stay.Tradition should be respected too and not challenged. Tradition brings people closer to church. I don’t understand why the people were not allowed to get in the church last Tromba.
I was lucky last year to be home to see the Tromba.I will post some photos that I took last year. LG 88

Ey sira pala tuktok mong mag payo.

Dapat ituloy pa rin ang pagoda, and make it really a big income generating project of Baras Municipal Government thru tourism and cultural activities of Baras.
How to cover? – invite abs/cbn and gma7, to get the nationwide and global audience, – bro to advertise preparations and timing of the next pagoda with or without the support of the parish priest.
