I’m part of a team who’s making a book about a parish in Rizal province. Saint Joseph happens to be part of the saints in that church. Here’s the article I’ve written for that book.

Joseph came from the lineage of David, considered to be the greatest king of Israel. There were two accounts in the Gospel that mentioned Joseph’s father, though both accounts conflict each other. In Luke 3:23-24, Joseph was said to be the son of Heli. In Matthew 1:16, he was said to be the son of Jacob. He was a “tekton” a Greek term which loosely translates to being a carpenter (Matthew 13:55). He is considered to be the foster-father of Jesus.

Mary was pledged to marry Joseph but before the marriage could take place, Mary was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. He didn’t want to expose Mary to public humiliation so he decided to leave her.

An angel of the Lord then appeared to him and said “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20)

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, an angel again appeared in sleep to Joseph to warn him of an impending danger. “Get up, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him,” the angel said. After Herod died, Joseph was commanded again by an angel to go back to Israel.
No word in the Bible was attributed to Joseph. It was believed that he died before Jesus started preaching.

According to Catholic tradition, he died in the arms of Jesus and Mary. In the 8th of December 1870, Pope Pius IX proclaimed Joseph as the patron of the Universal Church. March 19 is celebrated as the Solemnity of Joseph. The May 1 festivity of Saint Joseph the Worker was introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955.

As guardian of Jesus, the Child Jesus is Joseph’s common attribute in arts. Although the Bible didn’t make any mention of his age, he is depicted as an elderly. The flower that Joseph held is a lily. Lily is considered to be a symbol of purity. There were some accounts saying that Joseph was chosen to become the husband of Mary because of all the suitors in the temple, only Joseph’s staff (or stick) bore flowers. The most common colors in Saint Joseph’s clothing are green, which symbolizes hope and fertility, and yellow for faith in God.

Reverend Father Gabriel Ferdinand Maria Pangilinan of Barangay Santiago celebrated last Saturday his thanksgiving mass at Saint Joseph Parish church, a week after his ordination at San Agustin Parish in Moonwalk, Parañaque. Pangilinan belongs to the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. The 28 year old priest is the second of the four children of Venancio Castañeda Pangilinan and Elvira Aguillon Pangilinan.

Pangilinan got his basic elementary education at Santiago Elementary School and later studied in Saint Joseph Parish School. He continued his vocation in University of Lasallete in Silang, Cavite, where he graduated in 2003.

He said that “the simplicity of the town and its aged old traditions in the practices of the faith,” contributed to his vocation as a priest.

God have really blessed the event. Rain was pouring before, during and after the mass at 6 pm. But when everybody was ready to go out for the procession, rain suddenly stopped. The sagalas were given white umbrellas just in case it drizzles during the procession.

If there’s a program in every fiesta that I least liked, it’s the serenata. Having lived in an era of portable music players, I haven’t really appreciated music by our local bands. Old fashioned, music that can’t be understood because there’s no lyrics in them, full of marches – these are some of my reasons of not listening to serenatas during fiestas. So in the era of iPods, is serenata still relevant?

My answer is in affirmative. Given the right mix of songs and presentation, the music they play could be soothing and pleasant to listen to.

Three nights ago, the Barasenian Band and Banda 49 held their first serenata in honor of the patron Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary. I was able to sit there from the very start until the end, not only to take pictures but listen to their music. The Barasenian Band’s conductor was Reynaldo Cawicaan Jr. and Nicanor Llagas for Banda 49. The spectators were not as many as those who watched the Harana Kay San Jose.

Conductor Reynaldo Cawicaan Jr.

Conductor Nicanor Llagas.

The bands played two sets, each set having three to four songs. There were some soloists like April Joy Diñozo playing the clarinet for the song Bahay Kubo, Jerold San Andres in bajo for Anita and Joshua Espinosa in alto sax for Beautiful Colorado.

Joshua Espinosa is one of the most applauded soloists.

If there’s one song that really moved me, it was Valera’s Top Hits by the Barasenian Band. I won’t say why, just watch the terrible video that I took with my cellphone.

Nine barangays participated in the street dance which lasted for almost three hours, under the scorching heat of the summer. The festivity started with a mass officiated by His Excellency Bishop Gabriel Reyes, together with other priests in the Diocese of Antipolo. Former mayor Dionisio Donato Garciano and Mayor Wilfredo Robles and some councilors attended the mass.

It’s very seldom we do watch programs in Baras that’s well planned and rehearsed. And it’s even rare to see the most powerful persons in the town and in the province to be in one place and watch a musical production in honor of our town’s patron – Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary.

Representative Adelina Rodriguez-Zaldarriaga and Andrea Bautista-Ynares attended last night’s Harana kay San Jose. Directed by Webby Ferrera, it is, so far, the “cleanest” program I’ve seen. From the opening of the lights to the entry of the choirs, from Sister Act to a Maala-ala mo kaya scene, from praise songs to current movie theme songs, everything was well orchestrated.

Parish priest Romarico Hilario, Representative Adelina Rodriguez-Zaldarriaga, Andrea Bautista Ynares (wife of Governor Casimiro Ynares Jr) and Mayor Wilfredo Robles.

The highlight of the program, of course, are the church choirs who dressed up and really prepared their skits, dance and songs for the patron. The program commenced with a simple narration of the life of Saint Joseph. It was followed by church praise songs, then movie themes like A Very Special Love and You Changed My Life. Songs by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Josh Groban and The Moffatts were also sung. A choir, whose members are in their 40s or 50s, sang kundiman songs. There were dance numbers but the one I like the most was a choir’s rendition of I Will Follow Him. Their costumes really made them look like nuns. By the way, there were real nuns who watched the program. It’s also safe to say that the church stairs were full of people.

Singing Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Aside from the ones singing on the stage, I saw some backup singers near the Barasenian Band who should also be commended for their good blending.

The night capped off with the raffle draw for those fund-raising tickets. A ticket buyer from Paranaque (I think) sold by a Catholic Women’s League member won the grand prize of P 15, 000.

More photos to follow once I’m finished editing them.
