Baras in 2008: A review

Posted on December 31, 2008, 1:38 PM under Baras in the News

The year 2008 was exciting for us. Baras Rizal Online started to be noticed not only by Barasenians living in other countries, but our local leaders as well. For this we thank all the readers, comment-posters and subscribers in making this possible. BRO is not getting thousands of traffic but I know that this will come soon. Also because of your financial support, I will continue making updates as necessary. I hope it’ll keep on pouring in. I still believe that through this website, Barasenians around the world will act as one in uplifting the lives of our fellowmen.

It’s also interesting to note that the top stories for 2008 are almost always political ones. Let’s take a review of what has happened this year:

1. Vice Mayor Armingol Pilapil Jr. puts in on record that he wants to seek a higher post. The man who has been into politics for decades now admitted that people around him has been encouraging him to run for mayor. But he doesn’t want to do that, yet, because he still believes in the leadership of the incumbent. In the last two elections Pilapil got more votes than Mayor Wilfredo Robles so it’s just natural to ask if the former has the inclinations to run as mayor.

2. BRO tracks the attendance of our Sangguniang Bayan members. I see this as one of the gauges on how our local legislators perform their duties.

3. A councilor compared the local government to Jesus Christ, whose works are recognized in other places but not in His own locality.

4. Favorite hideout of criminals. Still remember the massacre in RCBC bank in Cabuyao, Laguna? A self-confessed lookout in the crime happened to hide himself in the town. In 2007, suspects in the slay of an Abra congressman was arrested also in Baras. A billion peso worth of drug paraphernalia were likewise seized in Barangay San Jose in March. Back in 2007, hundreds of millions worth of shabu laboratory was busted in the same barangay.

5. Another Barasenian does great in the board exams. Lastly;

6. Dindo makes a comeback. At least in a portrait that now hangs in the new municipal building.

In the coming year, we hope to see more developments, and good news to write.
