Wish List for Baras in 2010

Everyone seems to be making their own New Year’s resolution – things they want to change or happen next year. My resolutions are not personal, rather things that I want to happen in our town next year.

1. Since it’s election time, I really hope that there will be a clean and honest poll next year. I know it’s already a cliche but knowing the political landscape in the country, violence occurs during election season.

2. For the candidates to say what they have done in the past, at present, and what they plan to do in the future in case they are elected. Looking at the official list of candidates, you can see some familiar names which you only come to remember when there are elections. It looks to me that they only come out every three years, not because they want to serve, but because of money. Although they have to shelve out money for their campaign, they also rake in from their political parties. And then there are candidates who are either my classmate, lower batchmate, or just a year older than me. The candidates have to prove that they can serve better (if they have served the community before) if they have a position in the local government.

3. For the candidates to allow me to interview them, one on one, with multiple cameras facing them. I’ll ask them a lot of questions, specially those running for mayor. At least one of them has told me in 2007 that he will not run again for mayor in case he loses in that election. I wonder what will be his answer now. This is the only form of debate that we can see. A live, town-hall meeting type of debate is impossible due to logistical reasons.

4. I hope that there be a shift in the way political rallies are held. How many times have you heard the following phrases – “tama na ang sabuyan ng putik, ang pulitika ay iisang araw lamang, hindi siya tunay na abogado, kurakot sa gobyerno, babaero, sugalero, drug lord, para sa tunay na pagbabago, etc.” Give me a break. I’ve heard this since 2001. Isn’t there something new that they can think of? Make the speeches positive, inspiring, life moving. And please, make your speeches short but juicy.

5. Business licenses and permits are renew every year. I hope wish the local government listened to me in my suggestion to setup a one-stop shop for renewing the licenses.
6. In the few instances that I hear the mass in Baras, I noticed that there are constant improvement in its facilities. I hope though, that there will be less “tarpaulinization” of the church. I see that tarpaulins are posted in the facade and its centuries-old walls. I see nothing wrong in giving information but I have this feeling that the church is being defaced. Can’t we just maintain and improve its structure without putting a noticeable modern touch on it? I wonder what the National Historical Commission will say about this.

7. A vehicle-less street. The road is for the people and passing vehicles. It’s not meant to be a parking lot. Barangay officials should do something to make the roads clear of parked vehicles. If car/tricycle/jeepney owners do not have their own garage, they do not have the right to own a vehicle. Lastly;

8. More silent night. Remember my post in September?

Mali ka dyan. A town hall debate is what this town needs. I will support you one hundred percent if you do that.

  2. baras_bukas Says:

It’ll be nice if those candidates or their representatives will post something here in this blog regarding their “plataforma” and not the pessimist or worrywart comments to one another. To all Baras people – this time need to be more intelligent in electing.

  3. observer Says:

  6. baras_bukas Says:

dapat nga debate, pero saan, di ko mapapanood o madidinig unless it’s televised on TFC. Thank you Baras people.

  7. bobon Says:

  10. observer Says:

Then kung ganyan ang attitude natin walang mangyayari. We do not even give the town a chance to elect wisely? Ganun ba kabayan? What do you suggest?

  11. Marco SIlvestre Says:

    rebolusyon di eleksyon!!!!

  12. BUO LOOB WALANG TAKOT Says:

    *rebolusyon*
    ……magdalo para sa pagbabago
