Putting Baras on the map, literally

If you haven’t heard it, Google has Google Map Maker that was launched October year. It is a “service that allows you add or edit features, such as roads, businesses, parks, schools and more.” Yesterday, the search engine company said that because of the hundreds of contributions made to the map, streets in key cities and provinces, including Rizal, have been identified.

Of course, my instinct is to check if they have already indexed our town. Guess what? They did. Here’s a sample:

A larger version can be found here.

So what does this mean to us? Well, it will be easier for visitors and tourists to find our little town. In the future, if trucks delivering balikbayan boxes have GPS using Google Maps, then it will be easier for them to find the streets. The municipality could also utilize the map for development planning.

I just have some apprehensions about the map. The Map Maker used the old names of the streets. As you might know, 11 years ago, the Sangguniang Bayan passed Ordinance Number 98-03 renaming 59 streets except for F Manalo, A. Ferrera, M Golla, San Jose and the main road JP Rizal. Streets were named after officials who led the town a long time ago. That’s what the councilors then, ¬†said, but we know of course that it was done to serve their political ambitions. Imagine a street named after your father or a kin? Renaming the street just caused confusion. Ironically, I’ve seen government documents still using the old names of the streets.

Anyway, Google Map (not to be confused with Google Map Maker) is often compared with that of Microsoft’s – the Live Search Map. Live Map’s coverage in the town proper is cloudy, but I have to take note that they’ve got better resolution in areas not covered by Google Map. The Philcomsat area is seen in Live Map, while a bunch of clouds cover them in Google Map.

its nice to see our town visibly with street names on google maps (my favorite map!) what catches my attention is the changing of most street names after past officials of our town. in my opinion, that was a drastic change and it’s not good. obviously, it was not a hit since the ordinance was passed more than a decade ago and still not in effect. hopefully the current officials will get rid of that ordinance. maybe some of those suggested names did some exceptional job for our town who deserves acknowledgement, but still a lot of them on the list doesn’t have any significance to our town or the street itself. most of them are not even part of the history of our town. i don’t wanna sound ungrateful but this is a big thing that should need more reasons to do.

Wow, it’s great! But i think, there are a lot of missing places, such as Brgy Pinugay, and the extension of Brgy. San Salvador.

It’s great to see our town on the map.
My birth place (the street name is still there- and I’m proud of it). Dell is right regarding street names should not be changed just based on old officials.
We should keep the history of the town and keep the street names that we used to know.

I was out of the country since 1977 and the time I came home for vacation, I was confused on some street names.

With the help of this map I was able to figure out again my way from the airport to Baras and other metro places (I was lost a little bit when I stayed for one night in Makati-used to be my work place)

  6. basilio Says:

It’s rediculous to see those officials names replacing our old street names that we used to know.

If there’s a new street then they can think of a new name pero iyong dati na sa history ay huwag palitan ang pangalan.

  7. elias Says:

HUWAG PO NATING SUNDIN ANG “ORDINANCE#98-03.
Mga kabayan, when we had our own Birth Certificates, it’s listed there was the old street names.
History is a history to keep.

  8. a true citizen of baras Says:

I agree, how rediculous they sound! Me, even though they have changed the name of the streets I still use the old street address ’cause that is what I have been using for all my legal documents eversince.

  9. walter Says:

then we will not grow if you are all conservative, let’s face the changes and embrace it,even it is a small matter it show changes,at least we know our official are also thingking. even in private sector they are paying high salary to acquire new strategy and ideas which I think you are all belong to.

  10. elias Says:

it’s not being conservative to keep the real names. there’s no sense of changing your name since you’re birth. (you can have aliases if you want). doing or constructing a town project is one way of growing up. that’s how they get paid and how to use the public budget.
… think of more better ideas and put it in ordinances to keep the town safe, progressive and happy.

  11. walter Says:

they make sense,I know some who change their names, were lucky our names sounds good. I even know a guy who are born in makati in 1975 still in his birth certificate was province of Rizal were even calling province mate.
,I agree with you in physical change it needs construction project.everything that are not like before are changes or development in either growing up or going down.
what’s wrong in honoring a person, maybe they have some failure during their time, but not always.they are already part of our town history. and we are all part of our history. the difference is our names also banished as we die,and as for them ,they are always remembered as our previous leaders.
I have also difficulty in my address before, having different names on same street I was living, but I have to change it, my work dictates me to pinpoint my identities, for my personal accreditation and license conversion to every nation our company dealt with. what I’m trying to say it defends on the situation maybe, still it changes my permanent address only not my birth certificate.

  12. dell Says:

we are not saying “do not accept changes.” when we can avoid ugly changes, why not do it. this is a kind of change that doesn’t make any makes sense at all.

  13. Ewan ko po....wag po... Says:

  14. balut-pinoy Says:

I know I have my last name there too mentioned more than once but I think the assignment of names to a certain street is not appropriate or justified.

I STILL STICK WITH THE OLD NAMES OF THE STREET THAT I USED TO KNOW FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.

  17. bukang liwayway Says:

sana may magsimula nito tiyak maraming susuporta

  18. salang-bato Says:

A. Bonifacio St, P. Burgos St., Trabajo St, Katwiran St., A. Mabini St., A.Ferrera St., Salvador St, San Jose St., Alejo St., atbp.
(It’s just a name)

  19. bukang liwayway Says:

  20. yvonne Says:

Hi Yam, taga-Baras po me, since birth, nag-cocomment lang po at nagtatanong lang naman po, wala namang pong masama magtanong, di po ba!?

  21. baras&i Says:
