Nutrition
Among surveyed households in 1997, 16.14% of respondents indicated that their new born child was less than 2.5 kilograms. Of the total 16.14%, 6.84% can be found in Barangay Pinugay, 1.92% in San Miguel, 1.54% in San Jose, 1.72% in Santiago and 1.10% in Rizal. An astounding 13.97% of respondents indicated that they have children in their household who are moderately or severely malnourished. Barangays Pinugay, Evangelista, Mabini, San Jose and Santiago contribute 4.37%, 1.19%, 2.64%, 1.975 & 2.13% respectively.

These numbers however do not indicate the actual figure but are indicative of the presence of underweight and malnourished children among households. In January to June 1997, a total of 4,590 children were weighed. The results show a relatively lower incidence of child malnutrition (shown in Table 3). This shows that the incidence of first degree and second degree malnutrition is spread out among the barangays and households in Baras.
